Integrity – Community – Accountability

What is Governance?

There are different definitions and the documents in our DownLoad section illustrate that. In our DownLoad centre, we have resources and documents that have influenced our approach.  Resources from the DIYCommittee Guide from Northern Ireland, Governance Standards from the Republic of Ireland, from the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland, from Sporting Governing Bodies, the Nolan Principles, the OECD and from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Sustainable Development Goals

The work on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) by the UNDP have influenced how we in Prospect Awards think about governance and how we go about our work. We like to think we are a small part of a big picture, helping with the ideal and the actual of the Sustainable Development Goals.  The SDG website is worth a visit, really worth a visit!

Community Development Standards

A key part of our work is using the Community Development Standards (CDNOS) and for Voluntary and Community Organisations we use the CDNOS.  We also use the CDNOS to support Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives within the Commerce and Business sectors.  The CDNOS help businesses evaluate community, charitable and voluntary organisations and their work to the CSR work of the partnering business.  It also importantly gives the community organisation an opportunity to see if they wish to partner with a specific business or group of business.

Good Governance

So what is Governance? We think the question should be what is Good Governance?  That takes our thinking and engagement away from dry dictionary based definitions into a Value Based Perspective.  That’s where we are and that’s what we believe in.

Being good at Governance requires a set of skills, being good at Good Governance requires a set of Values as well as the skills.

At Prospect Awards we begin with building engagement around  values and then build the Skillset to deliver the work of the group, community, organisation, based on those agreed values.     It’s what we do and it’s what we believe and we also think it’s wise!
